ZURICH (AP) ? FIFA has banned 74 more officials and players from world soccer for helping fix matches, this time in Italy and South Korea.

FIFA says it imposed sanctions on 70 people, including 11 who were banned for life, after a series of cases prosecuted by Italian soccer authorities.

FIFA says the charges involved "match-fixing (direct involvement or omission to report match-fixing), illegal betting or corrupt organization (association to commit illicit acts)."

Prosecutors in Cremona, Bari and Napoli have pieced together a conspiracy they believe was organized from Singapore to bet on rigged Italian soccer games.

Last week, Italian authorities detained suspect Admir Suljic, a Slovenian national, when he landed in Milan on a flight from Singapore. Suljic, alleged to be an associate of Singaporean businessman Tan Seet Eng, faces charges of criminal association and sports fraud.

Tan, also known as Dan Tan, is accused of heading a crime syndicate that has made millions of dollars gambling on fixed matches around the world.

Singapore police said last week that Tan was assisting its investigation into alleged match-fixing.

FIFA said the four new South Korean cases follow worldwide sanctions imposed on 10 people last year and a further 41 last month.

The latest global sanctions were announced two days after FIFA extended bans to 58 people found guilty of match-fixing offenses in China. Of those, FIFA expelled 33 from soccer for life, including 2002 World Cup referee Lu Jun.

FIFA can apply worldwide sanctions after national associations complete their own investigations and impose bans.

The ?Unsinkable? Titanic II

Let?s hope the Titanic II ocean liner doesn't end up like the original.

The Australian billionaire Clive Palmer, who is financing plans for the replica luxury liner, unveiled blueprints for the ship that will be built in China and have its maiden voyage in 2016 to chart the course of the original Titanic from Southampton, England, to New York City ? minus the iceberg.

Palmer said, ?The area [for] passengers will be authentic with the same design and facilities. But there will be modern things such as air conditioning and other features we are debating - such as internet on the ship.? Costumes inspired by the 1920s will even be provided. And, yes, enough life boats for everyone.

For "Titanic" movie fans (looking at you, preteen girls), the ship will be designed to make passengers feel like they?re extras in the movie. Minus the last part. (The actual Titanic, just as the one in the James Cameron film, sank en route to New York after hitting an iceberg on April 15, 1912.)

Palmer wouldn?t jinx the project, saying at a press conference, ?I'm not too superstitious ... Anything will sink if you put a hole in it. I think it would be very cavalier to say it.?

And passengers can rest easy: the Finnish shipbuilder behind the reconstruction says it will be the "safest cruise ship in the world. " What could possibly go wrong?

Twitter had some ideas. News of the Titanic II plans quickly caught the attention of the social media site, making the ship a trending topic. Martin ?@MartinComedyy posted, ?Titanic II...is there going to be an Iceberg II??

Andy Lassner ?@andylassner added, ?Just heard about the billionaire who's building Titanic II that'll be ready in 2016. I'll be rushing to get my Hindenburg II done by 2015.?

Jared ?@ghero46 wrote, ?I've got this weird, sinking feeling about the Titanic II being built.?

Of course, a ship doesn?t have to actually sink to be the vacation from hell.

The Carnival cruise ship Triumph, a 14-story luxury liner carrying 4,200 passengers and crew, in February lost power to propulsion, refrigeration, generators, and yes, toilets, after a fire in the engine room turned a pleasure cruise into a five-day nightmare of spoiled food and nonworking toilets.

A lawsuit filed on behalf of passenger Cassie Terry described the situation as ?the voyage of the damned,? adding that Terry ?was forced to subsist for days in a floating toilet, a floating Petri dish, a floating hell.?

Apple joins Facebook, others, in support of same-sex marriage

Apple joins Facebook, others, in support of same-sex marriage

Apple is joining more than sixty companies, including Facebook and Intel, in urging the U.S. Supreme Court to strike down Proposition 8, a California law that prohibits same-sex marriage by defining marriage as a union between one man and one woman. According to Bloomberg, the group that Apple is joining argues that the California ban, along with those in effect in 41 other states, negatively impacts both company morale and recruiting.

?No matter how welcoming the corporate culture, it cannot overcome the societal stigma institutionalized by Proposition 8 and similar laws,? the companies will argue, according to a copy of the brief provided by Orrick Herrington Sutcliffe LLP, the law firm representing the group.

This filing is one of many recent actions by this group and others designed to sway judicial opinion in favor of gay marriage. As for Apple in particular, they have a history of supporting this cause. When Proposition 8 was on the ballot in 2008, Apple issued a statement in support of same-sex marriage, asking voters to reject the measure. The Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in the case on March 26, with a decision expected in June of this year.

Shell Oil Cancels 2013 Arctic Drilling. Now What?

It's no surprise, but now it's official: Shell oil announced that it will not be drilling for oil north of the Alaska coast in 2013. The company bored preliminary holes in the fall of 2012 in preparation for drilling a series of exploratory wells this summer. The idea was to become the first company to find significant oil in America's slice of the Arctic Ocean, and open up a whole new energy frontier. That plan will have to wait.

The company's Kulluk oil rig, which ran aground in the Gulf of Alaska on New Year's Eve, still needs to be transported to Dutch Harbor in the Aleutian Islands before it can begin its journey to an Asian shipyard for repairs. The Noble Discoverer drillship, Shell's second rig, is even more troubled. A few days ago, the Coast Guard referred its investigation into violations onboard the ship to the Department of Justice for potential prosecution.

It's been a rough week for the oil industry, overall. The energy news is all about the BP oil spill trial, opposition to the Keystone XL pipeline, and investigations into Shell's drilling program. The stories share some DNA. In recent years, we've seen increasing focus on hard-to-get oil, crude that you can't extract from shallow water or from easy-to-access wells in the desert. That's why we have deep-water drilling, rising output from the oil sands of Alberta, and exploration in the Arctic Ocean: The age of easy oil is waning. These alternative sources of oil are resulting in growing production and even faster-rising estimates of domestic fossil fuel reserves. They are a big part of the future. But the technical difficulties and environmental impacts are becoming increasingly clear.

Of all those case studies of hard-to-get oil, Shell's may be the most surprising. It's simply astonishing that one of the biggest companies in the world could spend nearly $5 billion and the better part of a decade working in the region without completing a single exploratory well. Industry advocates have voiced legitimate complaints about the sometimes byzantine regulatory process, but none of that explains Shell's missteps in 2012, after its permits were essentially all in place. To cite just the most memorable problems: A barge meant to carry oil-spill response equipment had trouble passing CoastGuard inspections, and the equipment itself buckled during testing in the calm waters of Puget Sound. The Kulluk ran aground south of Anchorage once the season had ended. And then there's the Discoverer.

Last fall, when I was on the North Slope to visit the Kulluk for several days, I met a Discoverer worker who said that exploring the drillship's engine room, with its 1960s Mitsubishi engine that they dubbed Big Green, was like going into a museum. A number of the problems cited by the Coast Guard relate to the engine room and the exhaust system. The list includes such seemingly elementary mistakes as exposed wiring and this:

6. Exhaust system back-fires on regular basis. Chief engineer suspects this is due to change to exhaust system in order to accommodate helicopter deck installation. As a result of back-fires (one of which resulted in a stack fire recently),main propulsion machinery and all auxiliary machinery essential to the propulsion and safety of the unit may be compromised. (IMO MODU Code 1979 7.1.3)
Massachusetts Rep. Ed Markey, who sits on the House Natural Resources Committee, and a number of environmental groups have been calling for a review of Arctic Ocean oil exploration rules. Meanwhile, several other companies, including ConocoPhillips and Statoil, hold offshore leases in the region and have been planning to drill in the next three years. And the Department of the Interior has made public its intention to hold more lease sales in the Arctic Ocean. In light of the multiple investigations going on right now, at least some of those plans seem likely to change.

Video: N.J. Gov. Chris Christie snubbed by CPAC

>>> new jersey governor chris christie , a new battle today. this time, he's at odds with his own party. andrea mitchell is here to explain that. good morning to you.

>> good morning, matt. 74% approval rating in new jersey. that's the envy of his fellow governors. that does not seem to matter to the republican party 's conservative leaders. the latest sign that chris christie won't bow down to hardliners, his annual budget speech, signing on to obamacare, eighth republican governor to accept the plan.

>> it's simple. we're putting people first. which is why after considerable discussion and research i have decided to participate in medicaid expansion under the affordable care act .

>> reporter: that follows a very public embrace when the president pledged federal aid after superstorm sandy the week before the election.

>> i cannot thank the president enough for his personal concern and compassion for our state and for the people of our state.

>> reporter: romney supporters were furious. later, christie railed against house republicans for shelving a disaster relief bill.

>> shame on you. shame on congress.

>> reporter: now a snub from the political conference, inviting every national republican to speak except the keynoter of the 2012 convention, chris christie . christie turned down the group's invitation two years ago. they see a bigger problem, the party's refusal to broaden its base.

>> if the republican future does not include a place for people like chris christie , the republican party don't have a future.

>> reporter: the white house isn't doing christie any favors with republican hardliners, seating him this week in the place of honor, next to the first lady at the black tie dinner for governors. chri christie 's speech could help him.

>> he is up for re-election and the idea of national conservatives giving him a hard time doesn't hurt with moderate voters in new jersey.

>> if christie wants to run for president in 2016 , he will still have to figure out how to get through the primaries without making peace with his party's right wing. natalie?

PFT: Jets avoided Revis' reps while in Indy

Eli ManningAP

Giants right tackle David Diehl said he hasn?t been asked to take a pay cut yet, or? heard any inkling about his future with the team.

But he?s seen enough to know his time could come any time.

Diehl offered Newsday?s Tom Rock a glimpse into the mind of a smart NFL veteran, admitting he never knows when he shows up at the office whether it?s going to be his last.

?The thing you realize at an early age is that as an NFL player you have an expiration date on you and it comes with a price tag,? Diehl said. ?That?s the way that it always goes. Nothing has been said to me yet, but that?s all things you can?t control. The only things you can control are the way you prepare each and every day, getting myself healthy, and whenever that comes about we?ll deal with it. But as of now, nothing has been said.?

The Giants have already parted ways with Chris Canty, Michael Boley and Ahmad Bradshaw, and more moves could be coming.

Diehl has been showing up daily at the Giants facility to rehab his right knee after an arthroscopic procedure, which he had right after the season. Getting well is a big deal, whether it?s for the Giants or another team.

The 32-year-old tackle is entering the last year of his contract, set to earn a base salary of $4.475 million. That makes him ripe for some degree of transaction depending on other moves the Giants make up front.

With Will Beatty and Kevin Boothe pending unrestricted free agents, the Giants might have to prioritize.

?Am I shocked or surprised? No,? Diehl said of Giants roster turnover so far. ?This has happened year in and year out since I?ve been in the NFL, not only with our team but with teams across the league. This is something that always happens.?

Diehl?s approach is at once fatalistic and realistic, as very few players get to leave on their own terms. And with the salary cap a factor in every transaction, having a big salary is only good news if you get to keep it into the regular season.

As college costs rise, parents raiding retirement

Kevin Lamarque / Reuters

Graduating students at the University of Michigan commencement ceremony in Ann Arbor, Michigan in this May 1, 2010 file photograph. American families are failing to meet their college savings milestones as short-term needs and emergency savings take priority in family budgets.

By Sharon Epperson, TODAY

Paying for your child's education is a laudable goal, but may not be realistic for some parents who could wind up jeopardizing their own financial future in order to help put their sons and daughters through college.

Parents who are saving for college frequently raid retirement funds ? or plan to do so ? to pay their child's skyrocketing tuition bills, according to a new study released today from the nation's largest student loan provider Sallie Mae. More parents are currently saving for their retirement than for their children's education, but these families often plan to draw from retirement savings to help cover the costs of college, especially as other goals ? from building up a "rainy day" fund to increasing general savings ? take priority. "The economy is putting pressure on families in terms of whether they're saving, how much they're saving and where they're saving," said Sarah Ducich, senior vice president for public policy at Sallie Mae.

The report "How America Saves For College" surveyed more than 1,600 parents with children ages 18 or younger and found half of parents said they were focused on college savings, while 60 percent were focused on saving for retirement. But if they have to choose, parents are opting to boost their retirement savings ? 42 percent of parents who are not saving for college said they are saving for retirement.

The good news: More than three-quarters of those parents surveyed who are saving for college are also focused on saving for retirement.

The bad news: Many of those families who say they are saving for college also admit that they are doing so through their retirement fund. One-third intend to use these savings for college. The other two-thirds say that they would use their retirement savings to pay for college, only if necessary.

Families are more likely to use retirement savings to fund college as their children get older and the urgency intensifies. Less than half (44 percent) of families with children under age 6 would use retirement savings to pay for college, while more than seven in 10 (74 percent) families with teens would use their retirement for college, the survey found.

How much retirement money are they putting toward tuition and other college expenses?

Nearly 6 percent of parents in the thick of paying for college are drawing on retirement funds by taking a loan or withdrawal of about $6,475 on average, according to a 2012 Sallie Mae survey.

Unforeseen consequences
But here's the problem: Most parents don't realize paying for college with money withdrawn from a retirement account can result in a double whammy. First, the withdrawal can count as income, which is taxable. Plus, with that additional income, you'll reduce your financial aid eligibility the following year.

"Between the tax impact and the reduction in aid eligibility, the family may net very little return on their investment," said Mark Kantrowitz, publisher of Fastweb.com, a free scholarship matching service. "It also sacrifices retirement funds," he said.

By borrowing from your 401(k) or IRA, parents not only reduce their retirement balance, but also miss out accruing interest. And if you're under age 59 1/2 and take a loan from your 401(k), you'll have to pay back the loan with interest in five years, or immediately, if you change employers.

Jump start your college savings
So how can parents avoid raiding their retirement funds for college? It sounds very simple. Make a plan to save. The Sallie Mae study showed 70 percent of families with a set goal to save for college are confident they will save 10 percent of future college costs.

To ramp up college savings, start funding or add more money to a?529 college savings plan.?A 529 college savings plan allows you to save money for college and then withdraw the funds for qualified college expenses tax-free. Studies show that people who use 529 college savings plans are more successful college savers than those without 529 plans.

The College Savings Foundation's 2012 parent survey found that 22 percent of 529 owners have saved between $10,001 and $25,000, while only 9 percent of non-529 account owners have saved a similar amount. Likewise, 18 percent of 529 plan owners reported saving between $25,001 and $50,000. Only 4 percent of non-529 account owners managed to save as much. Overall, parents who have not opened a 529 plan are the least effective college savers ? nearly half have no college savings.

To help jump start your college savings, here are a few tips from Kantrowitz, who is also publisher of the financial aid information site FinAid.org:

  • Make savings automatic, so you don't have to think to save.
  • Increase the amount you save each year. You will quickly get used to not having the money in your checking account.
  • Whenever you get a windfall, such as a big income tax refund or inheritance, contribute all or part of it to the college savings plan.
  • When expenses change, resulting in some savings, devote the savings to college. "When your child no longer needs diapers or daycare, for example, redirect the savings to their college fund," Kantrowitz says.
  • Use a rebating program, like?Upromise, to help build your 529 plan faster.
  • Finally, get grandparents and other relatives involved. Have them contribute to your children's 529 plans instead of giving gifts on birthdays and holidays.

Make college savings a true, family affair.

The Galaxy S 4 ? we're assuming by the big "4" that the only change to Samsung's incredibly consistent naming approach will be to drop the Roman numerals ? will be the company's newest flagship device.

A poster spotted by AnandTech's Brian Klug during a visit to Samsung's demo room at the Consumer Electronics Show in early January suggests that the Galaxy S 4 could be rocking a 4.99-inch 1080p screen with a whopping 440 pixels per inch. While the iPhone 5 offers the significantly less dense 326 ppi, it's worth noting that it's practically impossible for human eyes to tell the difference. After a certain point, the individual pixels simply become indistinguishable.

That's about all we know (or think we know) about the Galaxy S 4 for now, so Samsung could have plenty of surprises waiting up its sleeves come March 14.

Cleaning oil spills with paper mill sludge?

Feb. 25, 2013 ? Eco-innovation is at its best when the waste of one industry becomes the raw material of another. This is precisely what the EU funded research project CAPS, is attempting to do with waste sludge from the paper industry. Its objective is to convert it into a highly absorbent material capable of cleaning up oil and chemical spills.

There are about 18 million tons of paper mill sludges produced in the EU, each year. Most of it is disposed of by burning it. This could soon change. Franc ?ernec, project leader at the Technological, Environmental and Logistic Centre in Koper, Slovenia came up with an innovative idea almost 17 years ago to reuse this by-product of the paper industry. "I knew about the high absorption rate of paper mill sludge for years," he said. "So I thought, why not use these characteristics and turn the waste into a useful product."

Petrol stations, car parks, laboratories and harbours could all soon use the new absorbent. Indeed, it is capable of absorbing any oil or fluid spilled on hard or water surfaces. As by-product from the paper industry, its main benefit is to be much cheaper to produce than any synthetic absorbent currently in use.

Know the first marine outdoor test has been successfully held in the harbour of Koper. In less than 3 minutes the absorbent surrounded by hydrophobic (water repellent) gauze absorbed about 1 litre of bio-diesel floating on the water surface. Another test was successfully conducted at a petrol station near Ljubljana, where accidentally spilled fuel was absorbed of the ground equally good than with the conventional absorbent.

As a result, Finland and several South American countries have already expressed interest in starting their own production of the paper mill sludge absorbent.

Flipping the 'off' switch on cell growth

    Monday, February 25, 2013

A protein known for turning on genes to help cells survive low-oxygen conditions also slows down the copying of new DNA strands, thus shutting down the growth of new cells, Johns Hopkins researchers report. Their discovery has wide-ranging implications, they say, given the importance of this copying ? known as DNA replication ? and new cell growth to many of the body's functions and in such diseases as cancer.

"We've long known that this protein, HIF-1?, can switch hundreds of genes on or off in response to low oxygen conditions," says Gregg Semenza, M.D., Ph.D., a molecular biologist who led the research team and has long studied the role of low-oxygen conditions in cancer, lung disease and heart disorders. "We've now learned that HIF-1? is even more versatile than we thought, as it can work directly to stop new cells from forming." A report on the discovery appears in the Feb. 12 issue of Science Signaling.

With his team, Semenza, who is the C. Michael Armstrong Professor of Medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine's Institute for Cell Engineering and Institute for Genomic Medicine, discovered HIF-1? in the 1990s and has studied it ever since, pinpointing a multitude of genes in different types of cells that have their activity ramped up or down by the activated protein. These changes in so-called "gene expression" help cells survive when oxygen-rich blood flow to an area slows or stops temporarily; they also allow tumors to build new blood vessels to feed themselves.

To learn how HIF-1?'s own activity is controlled, the team looked for proteins from human cells that would attach to HIF-1?. They found two, MCM3 and MCM7, that limited HIF-1?'s activity, and were also part of the DNA replication machinery. Those results were reported in 2011.

In the new research, Semenza and his colleagues further probed HIF-1?'s relationship to DNA replication by comparing cells in low-oxygen conditions to cells kept under normal conditions. They measured the amount of DNA replication complexes in the cells, as well as how active the complexes were. The cells kept in low-oxygen conditions, which had stopped dividing, had just as much of the DNA replication machinery as the normal dividing cells, the researchers found; the difference was that the machinery wasn't working. It turned out that in the nondividing cells, HIF-1? was binding to a protein that loads the DNA replication complex onto DNA strands, and preventing the complex from being activated.

"Our experiments answered the long-standing question of how, exactly, cells stop dividing in response to low oxygen," says Maimon Hubbi, Ph.D., a member of Semenza's team who is now working toward an M.D. degree. "It also shows us that the relationship between HIF-1? and the DNA replication complex is reciprocal ? that is, each can shut the other down."

Economy will grow, but slowly in 2013, experts say

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Business economists expect 2013 will be another year of sub-par growth for the U.S. economy, reflecting uncertainty stemming from the budget battles in Washington and Europe's on-going debt problems. But they think the economy will improve as the year progresses and by 2014 will grow at the fastest pace in nine years.

In its latest survey of top forecasters, the National Association for Business Economics said it expected the economy, as measured by the gross domestic product, to expand at an annual rate of 2 percent this year, slightly worse than last year's lackluster 2.2 percent growth.

For 2014, however, the NABE forecasters believe the economy will be growing at a rate of 2.8 percent, which would be the best performance since 2005. The GDP, the economy's total output of goods and services, shrank in 2008 and 2009 as the country went through the worst economic contraction since the Great Depression of the 1930s.

Since then economic growth has been modest as the economy has been held back by a variety of factors including prolonged unemployment.

The latest quarterly forecast from NABE is based on responses from 49 forecasters gathered from Jan. 28 through Feb. 5. On growth, it represented a slight downgrade from the survey released in December which forecast the economy would grow 2.1 percent this year.

The NABE panelists were pessimistic about the effects the budget battles in Washington would have on growth. Nearly all felt growth would be reduced this year, given the uncertainty surrounding the budget. One-half of the panelists felt the drag would shave less than one-half percentage point from growth while one-third put the drag at between one-half and a full percentage point knocked off growth this year.

The panelists saw the economy strengthening as the budget uncertainty is resolved. They forecast growth in the second half of this year would average above a rate of 2.5 percent and get stronger next year.

"While the NABE forecasters see fiscal threats, they are optimistic that there will be some resolution toward the second half of this year and that will result in an improvement in many of the numbers is 2014," said Nayantara Hensel, an economics professor at the National Defense University in Washington and a member of the NABE forecasting panel.

The next budget deadline will occur Friday when across-the-board spending cuts totaling $85 billion, known as a sequester, are scheduled to go into effect.

Congress and President Barack Obama averted the so-called fiscal cliff at the end of December with a deal that allowed tax rates to rise on individuals making more than $400,000 and families making more than $450,000 per year. That deal also allowed the temporary 2 percentage point cut in Social Security payroll taxes, which was in effect for two years, to expire.

The tax increases in the fiscal-cliff deal, especially the rise in Social Security payroll taxes, will mean slower growth this year. It will mean that a worker earning $50,000 annually will see his Social Security tax go up by $1,000.

That will slow consumer spending, which accounts for 70 percent of economic activity. The NABE panel forecast consumer spending will rise at an annual rate of 1.9 percent this year but will accelerate in 2014 to a growth rate of 2.5 percent.

The NABE panelists were also pessimistic about Europe's on-going budget troubles, which have hurt the U.S. economy by cutting into export sales. Over one-third of the panelists said they believe Spain will need a larger bailout package this year and one-fourth think that on-going debt troubles in Italy will force that country to take bailout support as well.

"The problems in Europe and our own domestic fiscal drama will keep the investment outlook subdued," said Kenneth Simonson, chief economist for the Associated General Contractors of America and a member of the NABE panel.

Among other predictions in the latest NABE survey:

?Unemployment, currently at 7.9 percent, will decline slowly to 7.5 percent by the end of this year and to 7 percent by the end of 2014, with average monthly job growth of 170,000 this year and 193,000 in 2014.

?Inflation will remain modest at around 2 percent, giving the Federal Reserve leeway to keep a key short-term interest rate at a record low near zero this year and in 2014.

?New home construction, which is finally rebounding after the housing bust, will jump 25.6 percent this year and another 17.3 percent in 2014, pushing construction next year to 1.15 million homes.

Cone of learning or cone of shame? - Daniel Willingham

A math teacher and Twitter friend from Scotland asked me about about this figure.
Picture I'm sure you've seen a figure like this. It is variously called the "learning pyramid," the "cone of learning," "the cone of experience," and others. It's often attributed to the National Training Laboratory, or to educator Edgar Dale.

You won't be surprised to learn that there are different versions out there with different percentages and some minor variations in the ordering of ac

Certainly, some mental activities are better for learning than others. And the ordering offered here doesn't seem crazy. Most people who have taught agree that long-term contemplation of how to help others understand complicated ideas is a marvelous way to improve one's own understanding of those ideas--certainly better than just reading them--although the estimate of 10% retention of what one reads seems kind of low, doesn't it?

If you enter "cone of experience" in Google scholar the first page offers a few papers that critique the idea, e.g., this one and this one, but you'll also see papers that cite it as if it's reliable.

    It's not.

So many variables affect memory retrieval, that you can't assign specific percentages of recall without specifying many more of them:

    • what material is recalled (gazing out the window of a car is an audiovisual experience just like watching an action movie, but your memory for these two audiovisual experiences will not be equivalent)
    • the age of the subjects
    • the delay between study and test (obviously, the percent recalled usually drops with delay)
    • what were subjects instructed to do as they read, demonstrated, taught, etc. (you can boost memory considerably for a reading task by asking subjects to summarize as they read)
    • how was memory tested (percent recalled is almost always much higher for recognition tests than recall).
    • what subjects know about the to-be-remembered material (if you already know something about the subject, memory will be much better.
Picture This is just an off-the-top-of-my-head list of factors that affect memory retrieval. They not only make it clear that the percentages suggested by the cone can't be counted on, but that the ordering of the activities could shift, depending on the specifics.

The cone of learning may not be reliable, but that doesn't mean that memory researchers have nothing to offer educators. For example, monograph published in January offers an extensive review of the experimental research on different study techniques. If you prefer something briefer, I'm ready to stand by the one-sentence summary I suggested in Why Don't Students Like School?: It's usually a good bet to try to think about material at study in the same way that you anticipate that you will need to think about it later.

And while I'm flacking my books I'll mention that When Can you Trust the Experts was written to help you evaluate the research basis of educational claims, cone-shaped or otherwise.

Women's Exposure to Chemicals May Explain Unexpected Breast Cancer

Breast Cancer 3-Day Women attend a fundraiser for breast cancer in San Francisco. Image: Flickr/cpurl

Deep in a laboratory freezer, 100,000 vials of blood have been frozen for the better part of five decades.

For scientist Barbara Cohn, it?s a treasure trove. Collected from more than 15,000 San Francisco Bay Area women after they gave birth in the 1960s, each vial of blood holds a woman?s lifetime of secrets.

Scientists say these vials could help them unravel one of the most enduring medical mysteries: Why do some women, with no family history, develop breast cancer?

The blood bears the chemical signature of environmental pollutants, some long banned, that the women were exposed to decades ago. Cohn, who directs the research in Berkeley, Calif., believes these early-life exposures may hold the key to understanding a woman's risk of breast cancer today.

The women's blood is being tested for traces of dozens of pollutants???used by industry and found in many consumer products???that can impersonate estrogen and other hormones. The theory is that early exposure to these chemicals, even before birth, inside the mother?s womb, may fundamentally alter the way that breast tissues grow, triggering cancer decades later.

Cancer patients and their doctors have long puzzled over what factors in a woman?s environment may raise her risk of breast cancer. One of every eight women in the United States is diagnosed with breast cancer during her lifetime, with more than 232,000 new cases diagnosed yearly, according to the American Cancer Society. Only five to 10 percent can be accounted for by genetics; other known risk factors include age, obesity and low physical activity.

Earlier this month, a science advisory panel?urged the federal government to fund more projects aimed at uncovering the environmental causes of breast cancer because eliminating these factors may provide the greatest opportunity to prevent it.

It?s particularly vexing for scientists because it?s difficult to unlock a woman?s exposures during her most critical times for breast development: in the womb and during puberty and pregnancy.

?As researchers looking at adult outcomes of disease processes such as breast cancer, one of the biggest challenges we face is trying to get a handle on prenatal exposures and what is going on in the prenatal environment,? said Shanna Swan, an environmental health scientist at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York.

Many scientists have been looking for connections between various environmental exposures and the disease???with mixed results. Some findings suggest links to a few chemicals, including the banned pesticide DDT. But others have found no link.

For example, experts from the American Cancer Society, reviewing previous studies, in 2002 found no association between breast cancer and chlorinated chemicals including DDT.

And in 2011, an institute of the National Academies of Sciences reported ?a possible link? between breast cancer and some common ingredients of vehicle exhaust, benzene and 1,3-butadiene. But the report?said the jury is still out for most other widespread chemicals, such as pesticides, ingredients of cosmetics and bisphenol A (BPA).

Artists with London connections among Juno Award nominees 0

London is on the Juno radar ? with a flurry of hopefuls with local ties in the 2013 Junos field announced Tuesday.

London-tied performers with Juno noms range from London, England?s Dan Snaith ? a Juno- and Polaris Music Prize winner with Caribou ? whose Daphni project is up in the electronic album category to vocalist Aviva Chernick, nominated with Toronto?s Jaffa Road in the world music category.

The London hopes this year aren?t as strong as the 2011 edition of the Junos. That year four Junos went to London-tied performers ? Caribou, Lara St. John, Shad and Meaghan Smith. But even an early, and likely partial, list for 2013 shows there are contenders in several fields.

Another former Londoner, Justin Broadbent, is up for his work on Metric?s Synthetica in the record package of the year category.

?Nominated for a Juno for best album artwork (Metric)! Wooh! #Juno2013 #JUNOAwards,? Broadbent said Tuesday on his Facebook page.

Former Western student Tony Dekker?s Great Lake Swimmers is nominated for roots & traditional album with New Wild Everywhere. The band includes violinist Miranda Mulholland, who studied opera at Western?s Don Wright music faculty.

Toronto?s Tafelmusik Baroque orchestra and chorus are up in classical categories with former Londoner Charlotte Nediger, harpsichord, and Julia Wedman, violin, among the London- and Western-tied members in the ensemble. Former Western music student Ivars Taurins directs the Tafelmusikc choir.

Toronto jazz vocalist Elizabeth Shepherd and pop album nominee Victoria Duffield, of B.C., are among the contenders with family and other ties to London. Duffield is nominated in the same category as Canadian superstars Justin Bieber and Carly Rae Jepsen.

Marble Falls? Carson Bowen drove in three runs with a two-out double in the fifth inning to lead the Mustangs to a come-from-behind 4-3 win over the Canyon Lake Hawks in the baseball season opener at Canyon Lake Monday.

The junior centerfielder smashed a 1-0 pitch up the middle to push Cole Wilson, Cody Goodman and Jimmy Daminco around the bases for a 4-2 lead.

Canyon Lake answered with a run in the bottom of the inning, but Marble Falls? pitching and defense was up to the task.

Marble Falls used four pitchers in the game with Goodman finishing off the game with three innings of work. Goodman allowed two hits, struck out one and stranded four runners.

Other pitchers in the game were Cole Ridgely, Stacy Heinatz and Garrett Winslett.

Domenic Patterson had a solo homer in the top of the second inning to help keep Marble Falls in the game.

Canyon Lake starting pitcher Logan Felch blasted a 2-run homer on a 2-2 pitch in the bottom of the first off Ridgely.

Marble Falls had three hits in the game, but Bowen?s and Patterson?s paid dividends.

For complete coverage of the season opener, please read Thursday?s Highlander.
